Foundations of Family: The booklist I wish I had

Life is hard. Throw in a screaming newborn, plus a toddler at the height of a tantrum, and it’s even harder. Throw in a supportive partner and it gets a little more manageable. Throw in a marriage founded on the word of God and fortified with prayer, and it gets way more manageable. Throw in the right biblically based books and develop a divine tool kit for marriage, and it gets way, way more manageable. Having a biblically based foundation- a strong marriage- helps you weather the inevitable storms of family life. Here, you will find the best Christian titles on marriage- the titles we wish we had in our early years of marriage.

Through taking the time to foster a strong marriage, and therefore family structure, the day to day struggles of family life don’t have to be insurmountable. Marriage is the foundation of a strong family. God designed us for family. God designed marriage to support the weight and toll that raising a family can take. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” That verse speaks to the challenges of family life and the fortifying nature of marriage. God designed us to walk through life with one another. Life isn’t easy, but it’s easier together.

These are the best Christian titles on marriage- the titles I wish we had in our early years of marriage. Each is full of biblically based wisdom and insight. My prayer is that these books help you to start your marriage off right, or strengthen your marriage, and set your family up with a strong foundation to weather the inevitable storms of life.

This title tackles cultural norms and expectations about marriage and views them from a biblical lens. As the title suggests, it questions the prevailing assumption that marriage is designed solely or mainly for happily ever after. Thomas’ shares how marriage can be sanctifying and helps us understand how growing in marriage and caring for your spouse prepares you for an eternal happily ever after. I also love that this title includes discussion questions for couples. It makes for a lovely opportunity to connect and learn together.

In “Marriage….,” we learn how to fortify our marriage for the long haul in the only way that really works- rooting it in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m a big fan of Tripp’s writing. I always appreciate a good list and I like that Tripp takes very big picture concepts and makes them accessible through this list of principles format.

This book is written as a 40 day challenge to fall more deeply in love with your spouse. Each day has a small challenge/suggestion for growing in your affection. I absolutely love how accessible this book is. This is a great option for those of us with young kiddos, who have limited time, and energy. It makes it simple to put in the effort and build or rebuild affection and lasting love through challenging seasons.
